THE SWEET SMELL OF COLLECTING ANTIQUES |

Anyone who wears cologne or perfume may be interested in how perfume came to be. In a word, “smoke” is how perfume got its start.
You see the word perfume originates form “per fumus” in Latin, meaning through smoke. It began as an offering to the Gods as people obtained perfume from the smoke given by burnt myrrh and incense.
So it began… the art of making perfume. Civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt studied aromatics by distilling flowers and oils and used them for their every day life as well as in their religious ceremonies.
Priests were responsible for making and distributing of the ointments and perfumes and even soldiers carried satchels with perfume to protect their skin and hair during wars.

But it was the Egyptians of high society that created the vessels made of colorful glass, stones and gold that started a new item for collectors! As time progressed, it was during the Renaissance that Venice and Florence became king of perfume making and the bottles became just as important.
In the 16th & 17th century, perfume became functional as a way to cover body odor, but it wasn't’t until the reign of Napoleon that perfume started to shape the way we use it now.

Today perfume quality is still enhanced by the uniqueness of the bottle it resides in and collectors are finding delight in purchasing originals like those from renowned bottle maker, Rene Lalique.
In the art of perfume, scent is not the only attraction. The bottle, the stopper, ornamentation, shape and color all play a part.

So where would one find such pieces to view, admire and buy? At the upcoming annual Arizona Antique Market, February 17-18-19, 2012 in Scottsdale, Arizona. A beautiful display of many different sizes, shapes and colors of antique perfume bottles will be at the show, including some by Lalique.
