Up Next is Flagstaff Antique Summer Showcase!

"American Mercantile - The Birth of Professional Advertising and the Impact it has on Consumer Culture in America" will be on display at the Flagstaff Antique Summer Showcase July 13-14-15, 2012.

Today most of us are over-loaded with the amount of advertising we receive daily. But in the early 1900’s, advertising was in the early stages and was viewed as fresh and informative. People strolling past the general store could easily spot a product being promoted and to them, an entire wealth of information was now at their disposal.

From Cosmetics to Soaps to Politics to Airlines, advertising began shaping the way consumers lived, looked or acted. Where they should travel and what they should buy. What political movement they should support and what company supported it as well!

For the most part advertisements were most frequently used for announcing goods available, but even in the earliest period, persuasive appeals were many times associated with basic products. American Airlines was just one company that promoted War Bonds. Basic broom display racks might have an advertisement promoting sough syrup. Soda fountains might say, “Drink Hires, it is pure!” A clock may promote Baking Soda.

Various shapes, sizes and outlets, advertising was used on almost anything. Big wooden bars, metal signs, trays, clocks, magazines, furniture, medicine display cabinets, soda fountains, tea racks and more. All these can be found at the Flagstaff Summer Showcase July 13-14-15, 2012

One cannot fully understand the history of culture without observing the ads and industry that created them.

Also at the show will be a variety of authentic antiques that include Nielsen Antiques who features more than sixty feet of Oak Furniture highlighting styles such as Country French, European and Early American. Exhibitors from throughout the region will be displaying and selling a wide variety of antiques and collectibles including European, Victorian and early American antiques, collectibles, jewelry, pottery, glass, locks, furniture, western antiques and collectibles, Native American artifacts, rugs, Kachinas, art, jewelry and much more.
