EPHEMERA COLLECTIONS NOT “INTENDED” FOR PRESERVATION

Ephemera Devil Girls From Mars

WHAT IS EPHEMERA ANYWAYS?
The meaning of the word “Ephemera “ is defined as “transitory written and printed matter not intended to be retained or preserved.” But with an ironic twist of intentions, collectors all over have been stocking up on everything from trade cards to airsickness bags, bookmarks to catalogues, greeting cards to letters, post cards to posters and stock certificates to tickets! These items though seem disposable, hold a special place in many people’s hearts!

What makes these collectibles so desirable?

Perhaps it’s the nostalgic feeling you receive when you take a “trip back into time” as you look at a 1921 post card that has an item to check if you “Need to Make Whoopee!” Or a reminder of sitting in a diner eating that blue plate special and drinking your favorite malt. Perhaps seeing a photo of the town you grew up in and how much it’s changed, sends a warm feeling to your heart. Whatever the scenario, these images are priceless and have always been a collectors favorite! The real test ? A mere smile indicates a piece’s value.
Ephemera Prohibition
Ephemera in simple terms is a walk back into time. How inventions were introduced, travel was made, cost of everyday items such as stamps or lye soap, as well as a political insight to the issues of the time!  Remember prohibition? War? Whoopee? Coney Island? Devil Girl From Mars? We all know the effect advertising has on us all, but when you see an old advertisement on a product you used as a kid, you realize how subliminally effective it really was!

Over the last decade, there has been a considerable upswing in attention to American Posters. Collectors are finding that American posters have a value that can be compared to it’s popular European counterpart. The hottest posters of the day? Posters that were made between World War I and World War II. Some pieces, such as James Montgomery Flagg’s “I Want You” poster can warrant a price tag of up to $10,000!
